Fabric craft is spying?

In the WW1 and WW2, the woman knitted to record some important information, like the time of arrival of the train (Wills, 2007). Encoding the messages by Morse Code. Using the knit stitch and purl stitch as 0 and 1.

Besides knitting as the record, here is another little story during the American Revolutionary War. Female used the stereotype of “old women are always knitting” as their advantage. An old lady pretending the knit on the hilltop while actually spying on the British for American soldiers (as cited in Zarrelli, 2017).
